Arnold Gardiner shared some of his expertise in watercolour painting at the March Branch Meeting. Arnold is a member of the Ulster Watercolour Society and is particularly well known for his work around the Titanic Quarter and the harbour where he has a special pass to visit the areas restricted to the general public. His landscape paintings of Connemara are breath taking! Arnold has kindly donated a painting to be auctioned at a Parish Event later in the year. Monday 9th of April was very busy as we prepared for the Diocesan Festival Service. This was a wonderful occasion when a new smaller and lighter Mothers’ Union banner was dedicated by Bishop Harold Miller. This was donated by Mrs Rosemary Simpson in memory of her mother Mrs Kerene (Renee) Cole. Approximately 250 members and guests attended from most of the Parishes in the Diocese of Down and Dromore. It was a pleasure to welcome the Diocesan President, Mrs June Butler together with many of the trustees, Revd Gerald McCartney, Chaplain and Rev Robert Howard, former Chaplain. A warm welcome was given to those clergy who attended with their Branch Representatives. Mrs Christine Eames former Worldwide President of Mothers’ Union also attended. The procession of both Diocesan and Parish banners was a wonderful spectacle. It was a delight to listen to Mr Ian Barber’s accompaniment to the hymns on the great St Mark’s Compton Organ. Thanks go to all those members and so many parishioners who provided supper. The kitchen was a hive of activity! It was so encouraging to see so many people working happily and enjoying the chat. Special thanks go to Brian Bingham – he was a tower of strength to all!
Mrs Lesley Donaldson was the speaker at the April meeting at 8.00 p.m. in the parlour. Lesley spoke on Women and Work 1890 – 1910.

A big thank you to all those Parishioners and their friends who so generously provided us with items for the washbags that were donated to the Ulster Hospital.
Members of the Mothers’ Union attended the Holy Communion Service on Wednesday 31st of January prior to enjoying coffee and scones in the Parlour and then assembling over forty washbags. This outreach of Mothers’ Union is particularly appreciated as often up to twenty bags are given out in any one day. According to the nursing staff the number of emergency patients admitted grows on a daily basis. One of the members also donated a selection of children’s knitwear these items being delivered to one of the shelters.
Our Curate, Chris, shared his Journey of Faith with us at our February meeting. The amount of preparation for this was much appreciated. Chris has popped into quite a few of our meetings and can always be assured of a warm welcome! On Saturday 10th of March members will meet in the Parlour at 10.00 a.m. to prepare rosebud gifts for Mothering Sunday. Our speaker on Wednesday 21st of March will be Arnold Gardiner who will share his love of painting with us. The Diocesan Festival Service will take place in St Mark’s on Monday 9th of April. The expected attendance at this Service will be about two hundred and fifty. Following the Service supper will be provided by members and other Parishioners.
